Music Unbound

Moved by the Music

Put in confinement, she laughed at them all She laughed and scoffed, “They think that they’re sane when a song means nothing.” Put in confinement with paper and pencil in hand She wrote her notebook full in less than a week. She wrote on the walls, the barred window, her bed She wrote until her fingers scraped on the ground with each word The pencil was short and she threw it out with a cringe At meal time she sneaked to the desk and retrieved five or four She stole another notebook and left a simple note “Deprive me of mine; I’ll take all of yours.” She scared most with her swaying moods Her laughter at night and tears with the noon The wardens forced her to scrub her cell, She laughed and asked them politely to go to hell. The words remained up and she remained insane Screaming daily of this throbbing pain One day the silence only seemed too still The guard opened the cell door with a chill, He stepped inside and discovered a note “Record and keep all I have wrote.” One simple request, the one not kept Reading the walls and papers, had moved them. They wept, And laughed. Her words gave them joy, sadness, excitement, Filled them with confidence, glee, depression, It filled their minds with pictures unknown Written with notes conjured a tone The notes and words made such a sound The beautiful music Of the insane—unbound

Author's Notes: I wrote this for you, to think for yourself. In my mind the 'throbbing pain' she had described was a physical pain. She was in pain because she couldn't hear any music. She was insane, and it was because she had all this music inside of her, and no other way to let it out besides writing. This is what had really driven her mad. I guess I don't know whether she had escaped or whether she had killed herself. I said she was unbound (from life or confinement).. I guess that's for you to decide.
